Mini-Moogle – Free Pattern!

Below, you’ll find a free crochet pattern to make an adorable Moogle – if you’re familiar with the Final Fantasy video games, you’ll know all about Moogles – the cute little delivery service!

This pattern is written in UK TERMS. See my handy conversion chart for UK / US terms here.

The size of your Moogle will vary based on the kind of yarn you use. For the pictured doll, I used Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat in Snow White, Corneli Rose, Light Orchid and Black (for details). He’s around 8 cm tall, including the bobble!

Materials

  • Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat or your choice of yarn in:
    – White
    – Pink or Red
    – Purple
    – Black (small amount for eye detail)
  • 1 mm hook (or hook size according to yarn label)
  • A short (approx 6cm) length of wire
  • Hot glue gun and glue or Superglue
  • Toy Stuffing
  • Stitch Marker 
  • Large-eyed needle
  • Scissors
  • Cosmetic Blush

Abbreviations (UK Terms)

  • CH – Chain
  • DC – Double Crochet (UK)
  • MR – Magic Ring
  • ST – Stitch
  • SL ST – Slip Stitch
  • INC – Increase
  • INV DEC – Invisible Decrease
  • RND – Round
  • DNFO – Do not fasten off
  • FO – Fasten off

MINI-MOOGLE PATTERN

Head - MAKE FIRST

In white,

1: 6 dc in MR (6)

2: Inc in each st (12)

3: [1 dc, inc] x 6 (18)

4: [2 dc, inc] x 6 (24)

5: [3 dc, inc] x 6 (30)

6 – 10 (5 rnds): Dc in each st (30)

11: 10 dc, 3 inc, 4 dc, 3 inc, 10 dc (36)

12 – 13 (2 rnds): Dc in each st (36)

14: [2 dc, inv dec] x 9 (27)

With your wire, create a spiral with approximately 3cm (you can trim this down later) of wire sticking straight up from the centre of the spiral.

Stick the straight wire through the centre of your starting Magic Ring and securely glue over the spiral part, so that it is fixed to the inside of the head.

15: [1 dc, inv dec] x 9 (18)

Stuff the head firmly.

16: Inv dec x 9 (9)

Sl st in the next st and FO. Hide your yarn tail inside the head.

EARS (Make x2)

In white,

1: 3 dc in MR (3)

2: inc, 2 dc (4)

3: [1 dc, inc] x 2 (6)

4: [1 dc, inc] x 3 (9)

FO with a long tail, press the ear flat to make a triangle shape and sew an ear to each side of the head, starting approximately 3 rounds out from the centre.

ARMS (Make x2 BEFORE BODY)

In white,

1: 6 dc in MR (6)

2: [inc, dc] x 3 (9)

3 – 6 (4 rnds): Dc in each st (9)

FO and hide the yarn tails inside the arm. The arms will be attached in round 16 of the body.

NOSE

In pink or red,

1: 6 dc in MR (6)

Sl st in the next st and FO.

Sew or glue to the face between the ‘cheeks’, with the top of the nose approximately 9 rounds down from the top.

TO FINISH THE HEAD:

Add some blush to the cheeks and inner ears, and sew the eyes with black thread.

 

HEAD BOBBLE

In pink or red,

1: 6 dc in MR (6)

2: Inc in each st (12)

3: [dc, inc] x 6 (18)

4 – 6 (3 rnds): Dc in each st (18)

Insert the length of wire that is currently sticking out of your Moogle’s head through the centre of the Magic Ring.

Position the bobble in the place you want it to sit and glue the wire in place. Trim excess wire so that it will fit neatly inside your completed bobble, and curl the end to blunt it.

Add a small amount of stuffing and continue working around as follows:

7: [dc, inv dec] x 6 (12)

8: Inv dec x 6 (6)

FO and sew the hole closed. Hide the yarn tail inside the bobble.

BODY:

Starting with the first leg.

Leg 1:

In white,

1: 6 dc in MR (6)

2: Inc in each st (12)

3 – 5 (3 rnds): Dc in each st (12)

FO and hide the yarn ends inside the leg.

Leg 2 and body:

In white,

1: 6 dc in MR (6)

2: Inc in each st (12)

3 – 5 (3 rnds): Dc in each st (12)

6: Ch 3, join to leg 1 with a dc. Continue working another 11 dc around leg 1, then 3 dc across the chain. Work 12 dc around the second leg, and an additional 3 dc across the other side of the chain. (30)

7: Dc in each st (30)

8: 5 dc, inc, 14 dc, inc, 9 dc (32)

9 – 10 (2 rnds): Dc in each st (32)

Add a small amount of stuffing to the legs and continue to add stuffing as you go so that the body is firm.

11: 6 dc, inv dec, 15 dc, inv dec, 7 dc (30)

12: 6 dc, inv dec, 13 dc, inv dec, 5 dc, inv dec (27)

13: 5 dc, inv dec, 12 dc, inv dec, 5 dc, inv dec (24)

14: 3 dc, inv dec, 10 dc, inv dec, 7 dc (22)

15: 20 dc, inv dec (21)

16: 3 dc, work the next 4 dc stitches through both tops of the first arm and the body (3 layers), 3 dc, inv dec, 3 dc, work the next 4 dc stitches through both tops of the second arm and the body (3 layers), 2 dc (20)

17: Inv dec, 6 dc, 3 inv dec, 6 dc (16)

18: 1 dc, 7 inv dec, sl st in next st (9)

FO with a long yarn tail, top up the stuffing if needed and sew the neck and head together.

WINGS (Make x2):

In purple, ch 7.

Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook,

1: Dc in the next 6 ch, ch 1 and turn (6)

2: Dc in the next 4 st, ch 1 and turn (4)

3: Dc in the next 4 st, ch 1 and turn (4)

4: Dc in the next 3 st, ch 1 and turn (3)

4: Dc in the next 3 st, ch 1 and turn (3)

5: Dc in the next 3 st (3)

FO with a long tail (for sewing) and carefully weave in your starting yarn tail. Sew to the back of the doll.
